Weather in the Lees Ferry and Glen Canyon Area
Lees Ferry, Marble Canyon and the general Colorado River/Glen Canyon area enjoys some of the best – and worst – weather in the continental United States. It can be hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, cold enough to freeze your fingers … or just right. Timing is everything.
Generally speaking, it’s best to avoid December, January and February for any kayaking. Hiking, photography, bird watching and even fishing are another story and the deep winter months with snow covered mountain peaks offer a special attraction.

In general terms, Kayaking Horseshoe Bend and Glen Canyon is recommended from late March or early April through early- to mid-November. Weather-appropriate clothing is required, so check weather forecasts before shoving off. It’s far better to carry a rain jacket than to wish you had one.
During the hottest days of June-July-August, wear a wide brim sun screen hat that you can dunk in the river frequently. Modern, moisture-wicking, long sleeve shirts block the sun and keep you much cooler than bare skin.
Plan on drinking plenty of water – alcoholic drinks including beer are not recommended until you’ve finished your float.
